A Floridiana Filled Vacation Rental!

Welcome to The Conch Bungalow!  Perhaps you discovered this website while searching for St. Augustine Vacation Rentals, or a friend referred you to us! We hope you'll spend time enjoying the old videos, looking over the postcard images, and finding out more about The Conch Bungalow.  St. Augustine Florida vacation rentals are numerous, but we doubt you'll find one as historically accurate and themed entirely in vintage Florida memorabilia as The Conch Bungalow!

With the holiday season upon us, we've added a bit of wintery wonderland décor - including retro Santas now sitting amongst the old Florida souvenirs in the china cabinets, and watchful soldier nutcrackers on post throughout the house

On these pages, visitors will be able to learn about the history behind The Conch Bungalow, and how to reserve your vacation stay at this unique home.  This beautiful bungalow, built in 1925, is located in the historic district, and offers an upscale vacation experience.

So important in a walking town like St. Augustine is LOCATION.  And The Conch Bungalow's location is superb.  Park your car in our private driveway, and walk to all the sights the City has to offer.

The Conch Bungalow is one of just a few "shotgun"' style homes - as well as one of the very  few Coquina Shell homes  - that still remain in the historic district of St. Augustine.  When renovating the front porch and windows on the house, our skilled craftsmen recreated some of the coquina shell that had been lost over almost 100 years.  The house is also one of only two shotgun homes on our block.  It was a style popular in the 1860s through 1920s, and The Conch Bungalow retains much of that original charm, although the floor plan has increased through the addition of hallways, bedrooms and an expanded bath.

We purchased the home in late 2013 from the original owners, and began the exciting six-month task of a complete remodel, from roof to new solid hardwood floors, and almost every wall in between.  Small details – glass door handles, cover plates modeled after the bungalow style, stacked door and window trim, mission style custom kitchen cabinetry – lend to the authenticity of the home.  The color scheme inside is bright and tropical – a nod to our location in the Sunshine State.  The exterior paint is vivid and chosen from an historical palette of colors representative of the 1920s bungalows.   The full restoration and renovations of the house were completed this Spring.

The Conch Bungalow is furnished in an “old Florida” style, with lots of vintage natural rattan furnishings and lighting, exquisite tropical bark cloth fabrics reminiscent of styles from the late 1940s and 50s, as well as memorabilia from Florida’s yesterday everywhere you look.  Bright hand-carved flower arrangements, water skis hanging on the wall, and a living room filled with authentic old Florida art greet you.  Off the living room is a den with more Florida memorabilia, comfortable seating, even a desk with 23" touch-screen computer for the convenience of our Guests.

The dining room seats a maximum of 6, with a 1950s glass-top rattan table and chairs, and has a medicine-cabinet inspired metal curio cabinet overflowing with souvenirs from many of Florida’s old roadside attractions, as well as 1920s bathing beauty chalk ware pieces and vintage tropical ceramics.   The large 1940s mahogany and rattan sideboard and hutch contain vintage tropical pottery pieces from major manufacturers of the 1940s and 50s – Shawnee, Haeger, Royal Copley and others.

The kitchen is completely modern, with new custom Mission-style cabinets, reeded glass on top cabinets, stainless appliances, and every extra you might need.  A  screened in porch opens off the kitchen, and offers a full sized washer and dryer, and access to the back yard and deck.

The Conch Bungalow has three bedrooms, all comfortably appointed, with new top-quality beds, pillows and linens (read more about the individual beds under descriptions for each room); two have queen beds, and one has a full/double.  Each bedroom has beautiful, original vintage Florida art, tropical lighting and plenty of closet space and hangers. The large bathroom contains twin sinks, comfort height toilet, and a deep-soak tub with shower, plus handicap bars throughout the bathroom (many Guests comment that the bathroom is one of their favorite places in the house!). Additionally, the spacious outdoor shower is equipped with both hot and cold water, and is fully enclosed for your privacy.

We have equipped the house with deluxe amenities for your comfort, from quality bedding and appliances, to the latest technology, including: 46 in. flat-screen LED HDTV in the living room (with 3-D capability); 32 in. LED HDTV in the bedroom; Blu-ray SMART DVD; 23 in. touch-screen computer with U-Verse High-Speed Fios Internet, Microsoft Office 2013 with Cloud capabilities; WiFi; and Sony stereo/CD player. Each bedroom has a Homopedics Sound Spa Personal Sound Machine for those who enjoy a soothing background sound when sleeping.

Backyard landscaping includes giant white Birds-of-Paradise alongside the spacious rear deck, and an 8-ft high privacy fence around the entire rear yard creates a true, secluded tropical setting (a visiting City employee recently remarked that the backyard was “like a tropical oasis.”).  The deck provides a pergola shading a large portion over the dining table, offering shelter from the Florida sun and a tremendous place to enjoy your meals at the outdoor table with comfortable seating for six.  There is plenty of seating elsewhere on the deck and lower paved areas, and ample grassy area off the deck for sunning.  A combination propane gas/charcoal grill is adjacent to the deck.  The outdoor hot/cold water shower was designed for your comfort, and adjoins the deck, with benches inside and outside, adjustable height shower head plus separate detachable head (great for rinsing sandy feet).  Front yard landscaping includes large philodendron framing your walk onto the comfortable shaded porch, a wonderful place to enjoy a morning coffee break and “people watch.”

As the owners of the Floridiana Festival & Highwaymen Artist Show - held annually in the Tampa Bay area since 2003 - we have a treasure trove of fun, vintage “Floridiana” collectibles that we have filled the house with - from old souvenir Florida pillowcases to vintage pottery pieces, politically incorrect stuffed and dressed up Caymen alligators to ephemera from Florida’s famous roadside attractions – old black and white photographic art of girls playing at the beach, the famous Weeki Wachee mermaids, greyhound racing programs from now-closed tracks, and much more (and yes, we have an alarm system in the house to protect from unwanted visitors).  Bibliophiles and casual readers alike will enjoy our eclectic selection of reading materials on Florida history and kitschy collectibles.

Our sincere hope is that our guests will come once, stay often, and spread the word about this unique vacation home rental, located just a few walking blocks from such famous historic St. Augustine attractions as Ripley’s Believe-it-or-Not-Odditorium, the Castillo de San Marco, and Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth.  We promise to provide a comfortable, clean and out-of-the-ordinary vacation home for you and your family or friends!
